PISCINA MIRABILIS

ENG - Art is deep by definition and this place is the perfect set for an immersive experience. Art can quench thirst, metaphorically. As it happened during the times of Augustus, when the cistern was used to withdraw water through the oculi, the project today plans to immerse the art in the cistern using the same holes. 

The association with Antony Gormley's opera "Another place" was inspiring, like a sort of physical Golconda bodies raining from above. On top of the ancient building there is a new modern building which houses the functions of the restaurant and conference spaces. It is the opportunity to observe the wonderful surrounding landscape, a camera con vista (room with a view). 

The new building is suspended above the old one. A vast steel cage frames what emerges from the Augustan artefact. The cage has a double function: it constitutes a theatrical space, like a stage tower, to enliven the sets and the second function which is to support the new building.

ITA - L'arte è profonda per definizione e questo luogo è il set perfetto per un'esperienza immersiva. L'arte può placare la sete, metaforicamente. Come accadeva ai tempi di Augusto, quando la cisterna veniva utilizzata per prelevare l'acqua attraverso gli oculi, il progetto oggi prevede di immergere l'arte nella cisterna utilizzando gli stessi fori.

L'associazione con l'opera "Another place" di Antony Gormley è stata stimolante: come una sorta di corpi fisici di Golconda che piovono dall'alto. In cima all'antico edificio si trova un nuovo edificio moderno che ospita le funzioni di ristorante e spazi per conferenze. È l'occasione per osservare il meraviglioso paesaggio circostante, una camera con vista sul Vesuvio.

Il nuovo edificio è sospeso sopra il vecchio. Una vasta gabbia d'acciaio incornicia ciò che emerge dal manufatto augusteo. La gabbia ha una doppia funzione: costituisce uno spazio teatrale, come una torre scenica, per animare le scenografie e la seconda funzione che è quella di sostenere il nuovo edificio.
